About

Seemaa Bhaan is an advocate enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi in 2023, and has been practising since then from her chamber in the Western Wing of the Tis Hazari Court complex.

Her work covers the matters that bring most people to a district court for the first time: a marriage that has broken down, a dispute over family property, a criminal complaint, or a claim after a road accident. Clients are taken through each stage in the language they are comfortable with, and told plainly what the court expects and how long it is likely to take.

Before you come

Call first. Court hearings run through the day, so a fixed time saves you a wasted trip.

Common questions

Questions people ask before their first visit. General information only — what applies to your matter depends on its own facts.

Can I explain my matter in Hindi?

Yes. Matters are discussed and explained in Hindi or English, whichever you are comfortable with, and court papers are explained to you in plain language before they are filed.

What papers should I bring for the first meeting?

Bring whatever you already have that relates to the matter — an FIR copy, a legal notice, an agreement, marriage papers, or medical and insurance documents in an accident case. The section above lists this matter by matter. If something is missing, you will be told what to arrange.

How long does a case usually take?

It depends on the type of matter, the court’s schedule and how the other side responds. You will be given a realistic idea of the stages and likely timeline at the start, rather than a promise about the result.

What are the fees?

Fees depend on the type of matter and the work it involves. They are discussed openly before anything is filed, so you know what to expect. Court fees and other expenses are separate and are explained to you as well.

Do you handle urgent bail matters?

Yes, regular and anticipatory bail applications are handled. Call the chamber and explain the situation so the next step can be decided quickly.

Do I have to attend every hearing myself?

Not always. In many matters the advocate appears on your behalf, and you are told in advance about the dates where your own presence is required, such as evidence, settlement or statements before the judge.

How long does a mutual consent divorce take?

After a joint petition is filed, the law provides for a waiting period between the first and second motion. In some cases the court may reduce that period. The exact position depends on your facts and is explained when the petition is prepared.

Can maintenance be claimed while the case is going on?

Yes, interim maintenance can be applied for while the main case is pending. The amount is decided by the court after looking at income, needs and the circumstances of both sides.

Who gets custody of the children?

There is no fixed rule. The court decides on what it considers to be in the welfare of the child, looking at age, schooling, the child’s own wishes where appropriate, and the situation of each parent. Visitation can also be arranged.

What can be done in a domestic violence complaint?

An application under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act can seek protection orders, residence in the shared household, maintenance and custody. Cases of dowry harassment are handled separately under criminal law.

What is the process in a cheque bounce case?

A legal notice has to be sent to the person who issued the cheque within the period allowed after the bank returns it, and a complaint can be filed if payment is not made within the time given in the notice. The dates matter, so bring the return memo and the cheque as soon as you can.

Someone has cheated me online. What can be done?

A complaint can be filed with the cyber cell and on the national cybercrime portal, and the bank should be informed immediately in a financial fraud. Keep screenshots, transaction details and the messages — they are the evidence.

Photographs of mine are being misused on social media. Is there a remedy?

Yes. There are provisions under the Information Technology Act and criminal law for obscene or non-consensual content and for harassment. Content can also be asked to be taken down. Preserve the links and screenshots before reporting.

How is compensation calculated in a road accident case?

The tribunal looks at matters such as the income of the injured or deceased person, age, the nature of the injury or disability, and medical expenses. A claim can be filed even where the vehicle was insured, and there are time limits, so it is better to ask early.

Can a claim be filed if the person who caused the accident is not traceable?

There are provisions for compensation in hit-and-run situations. Bring the FIR or DAR copy and the medical papers, and the available options will be explained.

I live outside Delhi. Can my matter still be handled?

It depends on where the case has to be filed, which is decided by law and not by choice. If the matter falls before the Delhi courts, it can be handled, and you will be told which dates actually require you to travel.

Can we settle without a full trial?

Often yes. Many family and civil matters are resolved through mediation or in Lok Adalat, which saves time and cost. Whether it suits your matter is discussed honestly, including where settlement would not be in your interest.

Is my discussion confidential?

Yes. What you tell your advocate about your case is confidential and is not disclosed to anyone else.

What happens after the first meeting?

You are told what can be filed, what it will cost, what papers are still needed, and the realistic timeline. Nothing is filed until you have agreed to it.
